Now, that Denali CTP3 is a reality I had to try to install it on my VM together with Sharepoint 2010.
My VM machine is a 64 bit windows 2008 r2 patched up with 8GB ram and plenty of disk space. The server is also a domain controller.
I already have an instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 on this server and since upgrade is not supported by Denali CTP3 because it is an evaluation version I installed it side-by-side.
I quiesced the farm, stopped the service, detached all the Sharepoint databases from SQL Server 2008 R2 and attached them to Denali CTP3.
I “detached” from the config database and wanted to attach it to the existing config database now residing on my Denali CTP3 instance.
When the Grey Wizard comes and gets ready for the configuration of Sharepoint, the wizard fails and in the log file you can see….
Failed to connect to the configuration database. An exception of type System.ArgumentNullException was thrown. Additional exception information: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: service System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: service
So I made a drastic decision and decided to delete all my Sharepoint databases on Denali CTP3. That went nice and easy 🙂
After that I need to configure a new farm on the Denali CTP3 instance and when the wizard runs I get the following error :
An exception of type System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException was thrown. Additional exception information: Could not find stored procedure 'sp_dboption'. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Could not find stored procedure 'sp_dboption'
To install Sharepoint 2010 on Denali CTP3
Sharepoint need SP1 (and August CU) in order to run on Denali CTP3
You will need to bring Sharepoint up to the latest SP and Patches. See Todd Klint’s blog for information about your Sharepoint version.
Update Sharepoint to the newest version and Cumulative updates. My VM machine needed SP1 : KB2460045 , and August CU : KB2553048.
Restart your server after each of the installs and you’re set to configure Sharepoint 2010 on your SQL Server Denali CTP3.
Happy Sharepointing !
