After installing Analysis Services Denali you might run into a problem when trying to create an instance for Tabular that is not the default instance for Analysis Services.
You cannot open the BIM file. Reason : The workspace database server 'localhost' is not a SQL server version Code-Named "Denali" or later.
Well, everytime you create a new Tabular project there are 2 settings that have their default values sat to localhost.

And the Model File property called Workspace Server
In the screenshots I’ve changed to my named instance of Denali .
If you want to modify that for all projects you can do it in Tools –> Options –> Analysis Service –> Default workspace Server
Now you should be able to create the tabular project.
If you still cannot connect, please check the running mode of your instance of analysis services. It has to be Tabular and not Multidimensional.
